RIT Bahadur — traditional orthography OpenType Unicode font for Malayalam
Bahadur was a celebrated comedy actor in Malayalam cinema, with a remarkable career that spanned four decades—from 1954 until his passing away in 2000. Over this time, he appeared in nearly 600 films, earning the admiration of audiences and peers alike.
In 1977, to mark the 25th anniversary of his acting career and the milestone of completing 400 films, Bahadur was honored by his friends and the people of his hometown, Kodungallur. This heartfelt gathering became a historic event in the annals of the Malayalam film industry, where many speakers paid tribute to his immense talent, enduring legacy, and extraordinary friendship.
The following year, in 1978, a commemorative souvenir was published, capturing the essence of the event through the speeches and reflections shared. The cover of this special publication was designed by the renowned artist and illustrator Namboodiri. His distinctive title design for the souvenir later served as the primary inspiration for the creation of the Bahadur font.
The Bahadur font draws its foundational geometry from the RIT Uroob typeface and stands out as an ornamental font ideal for use in book titles and signboards. It is a tribute not only to Bahadur’s vibrant personality and legacy but also to the artistic spirit of Namboodiri.

Colophon
This font is an offspring of Rachana movement under the leadership of R. Chitrajakumar who founded Rachana Akshara Vedi in 1999. He devised the ‘definitive character set’ of Malayalam based on traditional script which is the base of Rachana as well as this font.
The naming convention of glyphs (k1 for ക, k2 for ഖ etc.) is devised by K.H. Hussain in 2005 to form a mnemonic way to represent conjuncts and its components and to facilitate the coding of glyph substitution of conjuncts.
